Malaysia's Binariang Signs Contract With Hawaii-Pacific For Teleport Services
October 23, 2001 Hawaii-Pacific Teleport (”HPT”) of Oahu, Hawaii, said yesterday it has signed an agreement with Binariang Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. to provide teleport and Internet services to the Malaysian satellite carrier.
HPT said it will provide Binariang's Measat 2 spacecraft with Internet access to the West Coast and the North American Internet backbone at rates up to 155 Mbps. From its position at 148ºE, the satellite is able to cover Asia as far west as India.
Vince Waterson, HPT’s vice president for business development, said the teleport bought a new 11-meter antenna pointing to Measat 2, as well as special broadband, high power amplifiers that are needed to access the 72-MHz transponders on Measat 2.
"We made the investment because Measat 2 provides a strategically important link between the U.S., via Hawaii, and Asia for bypassing terrestrial Internet congestion in the region," he said.
Yau Chyong Lim, Binariang's regional marketing manager, said in a statement, "HPT’s teleport in Hawaii offers [Binariang] tremendous growth opportunities and connectivity that will enable [the company] to expand its business well beyond the Pacific Rim."
